Adventurist Life was a new type of magazine, part of the #IndependentMedia movement. A grass-roots approach with the adventure community in control over the content, not the advertisers. With the editorial budget funded entirely from the community, and ad-revenue used exclusively for operating costs like hosting and printing, a clear wall was created between the advertisers and the editorial team. The magazine has since been absorbed into American Adventurist, and lives on with the same guiding principles of editorial integrity and independence.

Creative tasks performed by the Layne Studio included from-scratch branding and identity, web and print design, photography, t-shirt/decal/patch design and production, technical services and managed hosting, editorial services, and more than a few adventure articles.
